The family living in this 1926 Hillsdale residence wanted to better utilize the rooms of their home. They were open to rearranging furniture, changing wall colors and adding new pieces to create a more cohesive design which flowed from room to room and offered better organization of space.
Solution
On the main level of the home, we rearranged the large living room/dining room to better define the spaces. The addition of a wonderful antique-inspired sitting chair helped complete a cozy sitting area for entertaining guests, while the dining area beyond is visually separated by a complementary area rug and a large planter.
We changed the color of the walls to a rich golden hue to lighten the space, and draw out the area rugs' highlights. New roman shades in a subtly striped custom fabric united the room's colors, and the new table lamp we paired with their heirloom reading chair creates a cozy reading nook.
The sitting room needed to serve multiple functions for the family. We created a small reading nook with a new overstuffed chair and ottoman, a loveseat for watching the television, and a small bistro table which can be utilized for eating breakfast or doing homework on the laptop.
New wall sconces were selected to boost the general, ambient lighting, and table and floor lamps provide task lighting. We also repeated the roman shades from the adjacent living room in this space to help the rooms flow together.
Downstairs we created a warm, inviting family room out of a previously un-used multi-level basement. We started with new wall-to-wall carpeting to unite the spaces. In the upper portion of the room we created a computer workstation and a cozy reading area.
The lower portion of the room became the entertainment center. A new loveseat and oversized ottoman were paired with two existing end chairs to create a comfortable seating area.
A beautiful new entertainment center sits next to a matching storage unit which provides additional seating thanks to the upholstered bench pillows we had made. Finally, new artwork and reading lamps used throughout the space helped to complete this room’s cozy makeover.
