Project #7 - Kitchen/Dining Room Remodel
Challenge

The owners of this residence wanted to update their small, dated kitchen and separate dining room, while increasing their storage space and maintaining a pet-friendly environment.

Solution

We decided to completely eliminate the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, creating more space for both cooking and entertaining. Storage was increased by removing the soffit and extending the wall cabinets all the way to the ceiling, as well as extending the cabinetry all along the back wall, from the kitchen into the dining area.

Family room

The new center island provides additional storage, as well as counter space for food preparation and a breakfast bar.

Kitchen

We incorporated new pantry space by extending an upper wall cabinet all the way down to countertop and adding roll-out drawers in the cabinets below.

Kitchen

The overall mood of the room was lightened by incorporating cherry wood cabinetry, warm tan walls and rich rusty-beige floor tiles. We contrasted this light palette by selecting a medium blue Corian countertop, which is repeated in the counter stools and sliding door shade. The general level of lighting was also increased with new recessed can lighting in the ceiling, and under-cabinet and pendant fixtures offer task lighting on the counters.

Half bath

The couple’s menagerie of pets were accounted for when we selected animal-friendly tile floors which will stand up to the constant wear from claws and dirt, and can be easily cleaned.
