Project #5 - Pearl District Loft
Challenge

The owner of this loft condo in Portland's Pearl District wanted to replace existing acrylic drop-in bathtub and shower units in the master and guest bathrooms with more substantial-looking fixtures. He also wanted to add new vanity cabinets to increase storage and counter space.

The client also wanted to add a custom-designed "martini bar" between the kitchen and living spaces. He wanted a bar which would not only function as a congregation area during parties, but would also serve as a breakfast bar he could use on a daily basis. He also expressed a desire to incorporate a design which would de-emphasize the sharp angles of the loft's existing columns and corners.

Solution

Because of the loft's open layout, I felt it was important to tie the materials used in the kitchen's existing cabinetry into the bathrooms. Existing pedestal sinks in both the master and guest bathrooms were replaced by cherry cabinets with wire panel inserts, giving the rooms a clean, modern feel while maximizing storage.

In order to make a useful space out of an awkward corner created by a large column in the guest bathroom, we had glass shelves cut to fit the tight space, creating a charming storage and display area.

For the bathtub and shower we utilized slate tile, which mirrored the vanity cabinets' warm brown and charcoal gray tones. We also chose clear glass doors to expose the natural beauty of the stonework.

To "soften" the main living space's angles and corners, we designed a large, half-circle martini bar, with storage on the interior of the arc and seating on the outside. The brushed stainless steel top proved perfect for entertaining and preparing drinks, as well as for serving everyday meals.
