Project #4 - Period Victorian Remodel
Challenge

The new owners of this historic 1886 house wanted to return the interiors to the home's Victorian roots. At the same time, they wanted the rooms to be comfortable and able to accommodate large groups during family gatherings.

Solution

The entry to the home establishes the Victorian theme throughout the main floor. We complemented the front door's original stained glass with a new central panel, and continued the floral motif on the floor and stair runners.

In the parlor, we continued the floral theme with a large area rug. Striped wall paper (a popular pattern during the Victorian era) and period-inspired draperies draw the eye upward toward a beautiful crystal chandelier.

The furniture is designed in the Queen Anne style, which was popular during the late Victorian period. The comfortable sofa and side chairs are covered in smaller floral patterns.

The formal dining room continues the use of Queen Anne furniture. The wallpaper in this room is gave us blues, greens and reds that were used as accent colors throughout the space.

The fireplace utilizes metal accent tiles that repeat the floral theme. A beautiful, antique-inspired mirror reflects the lace and satin covered windows.

Storage in the butler's pantry is provided by a mahogany breakfront that was originally located in the dining room. Additional storage was designed at the back of the room for large appliances and cookbooks, with cubby openings to keep wine bottles on hand.

In the kitchen, we used blue & white Victorian garden-themed wallpaper, a complementary light blue Corian countertop and a beautiful floral tile series in the backsplash.

We replaced a small, cramped kitchen remodeled in the 1980’s with a larger, more efficient work space utilizing an L-shaped plan with a stand-alone table/island.

We incorporated professional-grade appliances, multiple work areas, and an abundance of task lighting.

With a 10' ceiling, storage was easily maximized with a 7' bank of high storage cabinets with Victorian-inspired pierced tin inset in the top doors.

We incorporated a breakfast nook into the kitchen to allow the owners to interact with their guests while still conducting cooking preparations.

The guest bedroom features a reproduction Queen Anne writing desk. A scrollwork metal day bed doubles as a seating area. The owner's ancestor's wedding dress and vintage Victorian hat are displayed on a dressmaker's mannequin.

The cabinetry in this bathroom was designed to accommodate multiple users, as it is the only bathroom on the upper floor. The upper cabinet holds laundry supplies for the full-sized washer and dryer that are stacked in the large cabinet to the right.

The claw-foot bathtub was original to the house, though we modified the fixtures to serve as a shower as well. The outside of the tub was painted to complement the overall design.
